What Should I do if I’ve Been Raped?

Text Box: What should I do if I've been raped?

Go somewhere you can feel safe, like your room, a friend's place, or a crowded, public place. If you cannot get somewhere safe call 911 immediately.

Call someone. Calling a friend is good; calling someone with rape crisis training such as our staff or our volunteers is even better.

Calling the Sexual Assault Center’s hotline will give you the information you need to decide whether to seek medical treatment through the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners or through a local hospital.

You should get medical attention right away without changing your clothes, showering, douching, washing, eating or drinking. It can be hard not to clean up, of course - but being examined right away is the best way to ensure you get proper medical treatment.

Some rape survivors may want to report the incident to the police. You do not need to report to receive counseling or medical care. Reporting is an individual decision, so don't let anyone pressure you one way or the other.

Even if you were raped a long time ago (for example, in childhood), it is never too late to talk to someone about it.

If you want to report the crime in the state of Georgia, doctors and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners can only gather evidence in the first 72 hours after an assault has occurred.
